Responding to false teachings

Mixing eastern mysticism, buddhism, Christianity. Does that sound like New Age? Apparantly, this problem of mixing and pick-and-choose religion is nothing new.

The church of Colosse was under the influence of such false teachings. Paul's letter to the Colossians was written to counteract these false teachings. The problem for the church seems to have been that of syncretism, i.e., combining various teachings from different religions to come up with something new. Apparently, Greek philosophy, cultic practices, Christianity and Jewish speculations were blended together to offer a "fuller" type of spiritual experience and a deeper insight into the world of spirits. Paul argues against such teaching, showing that in Christ they had all things.
